During his residency at the Great Park, Mr. Loucks will engage the community through open rehearsals, a Chamber Music Series, and a showcase of work by young, local composers. He will also bring internationally acclaimed performers from New York, Montreal and Chicago to participate in his residency program. Please join us on Saturday, February 25th for “Four Hand Extravaganza!” – the February program of Chamber Music at the Orange County Great Park. Artist Jodie Lee joins Mr. Loucks for this fascinating program juxtaposing two musical forces: Mozart and Dvorak. Mozart was the first composer to employ two pianists at the same piano, a genre that is one of the most popular forms of music-making today. The performance features two Sonatas for Piano by Mozart, followed by Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances for Piano Four-Hands. Concert times are 2pm and 5pm; seating is limited and on a first come basis, so plan to arrive early. Also in February, join the artist for Open Rehearsals from 2pm – 5pm on February 25-27. During Open Rehearsals, you can visit with the artist, ask questions, and observe the creative process. On February 24, stop by the Artists Studios for Café Conversations, when Kevin will be brewing coffee and chatting with anyone who stops by. These informal settings provide additional opportunity for the artist to engage with our community and to make classical music accessible to all Park visitors. In her remarks during the ceremony, Foundation Director Marian Bergeson noted, “This marks a culmination of cooperative efforts between many stakeholders – the City, the Schools, Five Point, the Park Board, and the Foundation for the Great Park. Moving forward with the development of the Great Park Neighborhoods is critical to the development of the Great Park – they are intrinsically interwoven.” Ms. Bergseon acknowledged that getting to this point has taken hundreds of hours working together, but now we are seeing the benefits of that persistence and hard work. She concluded her comments noting, “This is a day of celebration for a true beginning. While we have much work ahead, the Foundation for the Great Park is dedicated to assist in the development and in providing private support for the Great Park… turning dreams into reality!”
While the next phase of the Great Park is under construction, rich and exciting programming is already taking place at the Great Park. Seasonal garden workshops for adults and children in the Farm+Food Lab; art exhibits in the Great Park Gallery; the Artist in Residence program in the Artists Studios; and special events at the sports fields on the North Lawn are just a few of the opportunities available for all to enjoy. The Foundation is proud to be a partner in this wonderful community endeavor. The Orange County Great Park provides a wealth of opportunity for the entire Orange County community. At the Foundation, we believe that the Great Park vision evolves from the promise that healthy communities and happy families will thrive – with a Great Park growing in their midst. With the approval on September 13, 2011 by the City of Irvine to authorize the building of the first homes, shops and offices within the Great Park Neighborhoods, city officials set the stage for private development to play its role in the overall success of creating a Great Park for all to enjoy. Over the past year, important progress has occurred at the Great Park as Phase One Development projects have been completed and as rich and exciting programming has attracted many thousands of new people to the Great Park. Ultimately, however, the Great Park experience will be interdependent with the communities that are built around the edge of the Great Park. The quality of the Park will be shaped in many ways by the design of the neighborhoods that define its periphery; and the success of the se neighborhoods will be greatly enhanced by the qualities that are being built into the Park. The relationship between the Great Park and the Great Park Neighborhoods reflects one of the most ambitious public private partnerships in this country. Amidst challenging conditions in the housing market, and instabilities within the broader economy, they have kept the vision of the Great Park moving forward. The City Council and Five Point communities are to be congratulated for implementing this shared vision. The Great Park Foundation will continue to encourage the building of this collaborative relationship, a relationship that is so important to the future of Orange County communities.
